What is Chemical Stripping?

As the name suggests, chemical stripping paint uses a chemical dip or spray to strip metal. Chemical paint stripping is a technique that utilises chemical solutions to eliminate paint, varnish, or other coatings from a surface. This method is widely used for refurbishing furniture, stripping old paint from metal items, and preparing surfaces for new finishes.
Chemical strippers operate by disrupting the adhesion between the paint and the surface beneath. The active ingredients in the stripper infiltrate the paint layers, causing them to expand and soften. This process facilitates the removal of the old coating through scraping.
Varieties of Chemical Strippers
Chemical strippers are primarily categorised into two main types:
Solvent-based removers: These products include potent solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) or dibasic ester. They excel at stripping away multiple layers of stubborn coatings but can be quite aggressive and often emit strong odors. Methylene chloride was once a popular and effective solvent but its usage has decreased due to health-related concerns.
Caustic removers: These contain alkaline agents like sodium hydroxide (lye). They are effective on oil-based paints, varnishes, and lacquers. However, caustic removers can harm certain surfaces, such as aluminum, and must be handled with care.
Chemical stripping is highly effective and uses chemical processes to interact with outer layers and coatings to remove them. The result is metal that is completely stripped back and free of any coating.
