Shot Blasting

Shot blasting (also known as sand blasting) is a method of treating a metal surface in order to remove existing coatings, contamination or outer defects. By propelling a blasting media at the surface it effectively strips away whatever is there, such as paint. Shot blasting plays an essential role in preparing surfaces for the powder coating process.

This technique involves launching abrasive materials, such as steel shot, at high speeds onto the metal surface that is to be coated. The mechanical abrasion achieved through this method fulfills several important functions that greatly improve the durability and quality of the final powder-coated product.

To begin with, shot blasting is extremely efficient in cleaning the substrate. It effectively eliminates contaminants like rust, mill scale, old paint, grease, and other debris that could hinder the powder coating’s adhesion. By producing a clean, bare metal surface, shot blasting facilitates direct contact between the powder and the substrate, resulting in a more robust bond.

Secondly, this procedure alters the surface texture. The effect of the abrasive materials results in a slightly roughened surface, offering “keyways” or anchor points for the powder coating to adhere to. This mechanical bonding is crucial for preventing chipping, peeling, and other types of coating failures, particularly in challenging applications.
